Doucet, F; Chauvet, C; Gilly, Bernard; Meuriot, Eric.

Gilly, Bernard; Meuriot, Eric.
Bio-economic models have not been extensively developed for the shellfish farming sector. However, this type of model could constitute a valuable analysis and assessment tool. Only the potential contribution of this kind of model in our knowledge of the evolution of production systems and marketing are discussed here. These models help comprehend the interactions between the strategies of the different players in the sector and also-on the level of individual businesses-between the shellfish farming sector, as well as the other economic activities that utilise shellfish farming areas, and the type of activity. In particular, it is possible to show the externalities that affect shellfish farming (for example, by revealing the relationships between nutrient...

Catanzano, Joseph; Gilly, Bernard; Lantz, Frederic; Durand, M.h..
(Not controled OCR) The economic results of artisanal fishing enterprises are investigated through a sample of 300 to 700 artisanal vessels for which account books are available from 1983 to 1986. The use of economic (such as added value) and financial ratios (solvency and financial autonomy) leads to the identification of four groups of firms. A rough classification has been identified from gears used and areas. Over the period, financial rentability and autonomy show obvious damaging that underlines the relevance of a (current) analysis on the impact of public subsidies on the enterprises behaviour.

Gilly, Bernard; Cochet, Y.
Shrimp fisheries in French Guyana suffer from the influence of exogenous pressures on shrimp stock. In terms of shrimp stock, the fluctuations in recruitment are very high and determine for the most part the annual production of shrimp boats (Figure 1). Work in progress on the evolution of shrimp stocks suggest that the relatively short shrimp life span (18 months) does not allow a cohort to be exploited over more than one year. In terms of the shrimp boat fleet, there are no alternative outlets for fishing effort.

Meuriot, Eric; Gilly, Bernard.
The object of this study is to provide an analysis of how prices are set for demersal species in France. The prices of what the Boulonnais seafaring trawlers bring in are studied more in retail. Several aspects are examined: - the effect of the size of the amounts landed; - the effect of the average size or weight of the fish; - the influence of imports of fresh and frozen fish; - the substitution among species; - the influence of changes of national income; - the effect of seasonality; These aspects are captured in this study from monthly data (these data were provided by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Boulogne-sur-Mer as well as by the Central Committee of Maritime Fishing). Excluded from the field of analysis are short-term price...

Gilly, Bernard; Meuriot, Eric.
On distingue typiquement trois filières technologiques différentes .

Gates, John; Gilly, Bernard.
The refined study of the structure of aquafarming companies (traditional shellfish farming or new aquafarming) comes out of this study's topic. The research of MERCKELBAGH and ESNOUF (1978), DUMONT (1984; 1985) on the shellfish farming sector and BARBAZANGE (1982), GILLY and WEBER (1985) on new aquafarming showed that production and marketing facilities in aquafarming were connected, in substance, to the facilities of small agricultural production. - Several factors argue in this direction: - French production is basically made up of small-scale and/or family-run companies, especially in shellfish farming. - the work is in the majority of cases carried out by family labour, possibly supplemented by a small number of permanent employees and a high number...

Estimating a function for the gross revenu of a sample of french trawlers ArchiMer
Catanzano, Joseph; Gilly, Bernard; Meuriot, Eric.
The purpose of this paper is to test the equation that allows gross income to fit age and length of french high sea trawlers : log (gross income) = a log (length) + b (age) + c Others attempts have been performed to replace length by the engine power, in order to see if it improves the results or not.

Meuriot, Eric; Gilly, Bernard.
This econometric study is an integral part of a series of research works that IFREMER is undertaking on use planning of scallop fishing in St Brieuc Bay. It aims to provide a quantification of changes in the value of new and used boats in use in St Brieuc Bay. This study will make it possible to: (i) explain the importance of the capital invested in scallop fisheries; that will be used for analysis of the growth of this fishery from 1965 to 1985; (ii) evaluate the pace of depreciation of the capital; this latter will be integrated into a bio-economical model that analyzes various strategies of long-term exploitation of the scallop stock (see "A bio-economic model for the scallop in St Brieuc Bay", by J.M. GATES, document DRV/SDA 86.06).

The peneid shrimp resource lying off French Guyanais a part of the large scale shrimp of the nortern coast of South America :the «Guy anas» from northern Brazil,French Guyana, Surinam and Guyana. The exploitation of this multi-species shrimp stock ,started in 1959, yielded a so-called «equilibrium annual yield of 12000 to 15000 metric tons .The overall set-up of EEZ national regulations lead, through a graduai fishery licencing system,to a sedentarisation of the fleets. The original political status of French Guyana (as a part of France andEuropean Economie Community) provides peculiar rules of this fishery managment.Looking through this 30 past years the general trends and step wise responses of fishery research to the enforcement and growing-up of fishery...

Gilly, Bernard; Weber, Jacques.
From symposiums to conferences, from reviews to evaluations, from laboratory to the field, aquaculture has not developed in apathy. Before it was even established, aquaculture challenged relationships between professionals, the scientific community, administrative authorities and political bodies. A review of documents, whatever their source, shows excessive reactions, sometimes optimistic, sometimes pessimistic. Why so much ado? How can we explain why aquaculture was accepted so heartily by professionals of the fishing industry who are generally considered to be relatively resistant to innovation? Why were stances defended so passionately by scientists, who in principle are prepared for the unexpected and trained for analysis? How can we explain why...

Catanzano, Joseph; Gilly, Bernard.
Almost twenty years have passed since the first production tests of salmonids in a marine environment in France (1970) (see VIDAL GIRAUD, 1980). After the laboratory work, joint experiment programmes (fishermen-CNEXO) were developed that ended in the beginnings of production. Conducted during the 70s, the research work and experiments to true scale (SODAB in the Côtes du Nord region and sites at Brest and Cherbourg harbours) opened the way to setting up twenty-odd salmon-farming operations.

Catanzano, Joseph; Gilly, Bernard; Lantz, Frederic.
(Not controled OCR) This paper presents some attempts for a French a rtisanal fishing enterprises typology. The originality of these attempts arises from the lead given to economic variables in order to analyze the fishing fleet using accountable datas both at national then regional level. The theoric use of economic and financial ratios (added value, solvency and financial autonomy) leads to the presentation of the a rtisanal fleet economic situation. The choice of a geographic area and the use of multiple-correspondance-analysis permits a cross analysis of fisheries features and return criteria.

Gilly, Bernard.
The bio-economic models in fishing : approaches and limits Bio-economic modelling technics for jisheries have been developed from the late jïfties. They are currently based on neo-classic economic therory. Their use has led to strong theoretical development in the Jield ofjsheries management, but they are utterly lacking qf pratical sense because the basic assumptions are not sujjïciently close to the reality. The main types of models are presented (statie and dynamic. determinist and random, simulation and optimisation) and their bounds are discussed.

Gilly, Bernard.
The marine farming sector in France is often assimilated, in major speeches, into new aquafarming (fish or crustaceans raised at sea), the production of which remains anecdotal. In practise, oyster and mussel breeds (traditional aquafarming) represent a business sector with an economic weight equivalent to that of maritime fishing. Major speeches, public sector, corporate and scientific, on new aquafarming have created an "aquafarming paradigm", perpetuated in the form of a system of ideological representations borrowed from other sectors (especially the agricultural sector). Disregarding the efficiency, complexity and determinism of the various aquaculture evaluation systems, this paradigm relies on an evolutionary model that analysis of recent history...
